Arithmania is an obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in which the person suffering from it has a strong need to count their actions or objects around them. The person with this type of OCD feels compelled to count, for example, the steps of a staircase or the number of words in a sentence or the number of letters in a word, feeling that it is necessary to perform this action, which can be done out loud or in thought.

How can you tell if a person has this type of disorder?

First, observe the frequency and intensity with which the person carries out these episodes of counting objects, actions, etc. Notice if these actions are repeated several times a day. If they are repetitive and intense, and become worrying because they affect and disrupt the person's life, it is important to seek treatment with a specialist in the psychological or psychiatric field.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is widely used in this type of disorder, a psychotherapy that focuses on modifying behaviors, emotional responses and thoughts, reducing the suffering caused by this type of OCD.

Is medication necessary?

Only the psychiatrist will know the condition of each patient, whether or not it is necessary to use medication that will help in the treatment process. Never self-medicate or give medication to other people without a doctor's recommendation, as this can greatly affect your own health and that of other people.

Medicine is very advanced in many treatments for (OCD) and there are also many medical professionals trained to explain to people about all types of obsessive compulsive disorder. Don't be afraid or ashamed to seek medical help, because the sooner you seek medical help, if you need it, the easier it will be to deal with this type of OCD.
