Linguistic Prejudice

Every type of prejudice is based on ideologies, values or interests that we are very surprised still exist. Let's talk here about linguistic prejudice, which is little talked about, but much seen around the world. How is linguistic prejudice identified?

When a person is discriminated against, excluded and ridiculed because of their accent or dialect, which may be different, linguistic prejudice is identified, because the person is discriminated against because of their speech, their expression in communicating. Like all prejudices, linguistic prejudice is a delay in the social evolution of humanity, because rejecting and discriminating against a person because of the way they express themselves is outdated.

How to identify linguistic prejudice?

If you're discriminated against because of the way you speak, you're certainly suffering prejudice. We live on a big planet where each region has its own language and dialects, so we shouldn't judge anyone, especially if it's because of the way they speak.

Who suffers most from this kind of prejudice?

All types of prejudice generate pain and suffering, but here is an example of linguistic prejudice. Once a person went for a job interview, where there were several candidates for the position. One person at a time was called into a room to be interviewed by the recruiter. When it was this person's turn to be interviewed, he was asked about some subjects and did very well in his answers, but this person had a different way of speaking from the other candidates.Once the interview was over, she was told to wait for a call back and she did. A few days passed and she received a phone call which made her very sad, because the company had really liked how well she had stood out in the interview, but at that moment they couldn't hire her.

This is a clear example of linguistic prejudice, veiled discrimination, because if she did well in the interview, it's not fair that because of her accent or dialect she was disadvantaged. A situation like this is just one of many others present in our society, which is a major driver of social exclusion. We know that there are cultural and social differences all over the world, but we shouldn't make these differences a parameter of what is right or wrong.

The main cause of linguistic prejudice is the ignorance of those who discriminate against others because they think they are superior.
