Cases of school violence are on the rise all over the world and we need to take a closer look at what is happening in many school institutions. But how can we identify cases of school violence? Observing the student's behavior is of paramount importance in identifying the problem, such as changes in temperament, mood, lack of interest in activities. School violence shows us a scenario of behavioral change, from the emotional to the social.
We know that the school and each student's family have a great responsibility to care for and educate children and young people and when there is a positive interaction between the two, the result is sure to be satisfactory. What are the most common causes of school violence? Cases of intolerance are certainly one of the main causes of school violence, favoring hate speech and acts of hatred. Knowing how to live with differences is fundamental for individuals to become respectful people with character. We must understand that violence in schools can occur in both physical and verbal forms, both of which are detrimental to the proper development of each citizen.
What are the types of school violence?
School violence occurs in various forms and can affect all members of the school body, such as students, teachers, staff and others, and makes us question the direction in which education is heading. Many educators withdraw from their profession due to mental health problems, such as the stress caused by the violence that is now very common in schools all over the world. Many students who have experienced situations in which they have been attacked both verbally and physically end up dropping out of school out of fear and also because their psychology has been affected.
But how to deal with and combat this problem?
First and foremost, the school must work with society and the family and understand that everyone should identify the school as an extension of each student's home and that it should be recognized as a safe and welcoming place. You shouldn't wait for cases of aggression to happen before starting a dialogue on the subject with students, teachers, staff and the family. Families should be involved in the school, it's important that they take part in activities at times when the teaching staff deem it necessary, so that they know how the student's academic and social development is going and in this way they will feel protected and motivated. Establishing rules of good coexistence is another way of dealing with violence at school, where dialogue and respect for others are positive attitudes to put an end to so many cases of violence.
We know that violence in schools is not a recent phenomenon, but if we take action today, we can be sure that the number of cases will decrease significantly. Society needs aware human beings who know how to respect differences.
