With a diversity of species, orchids have won over many gardening enthusiasts. Orchid care requires a lot of dedication and patience, because each species has its own particularities and types of care. Before you buy an orchid, try to research the species, knowing its needs and adaptations, so  its growth will be guaranteed and the plant will have more vitality.

Orchids prefer to be grown in a well-drained substrate such as pine bark, coconut fiber, charcoal, among others, which allows for better air circulation and water absorption. They can also be cared for with organic solutions such as dried leaves, fruit, egg shells, always making sure they are free of pests.

Orchid watering varies according to the species, the environment and the season. Generally, orchids are watered once a week. Always make sure that the substrate is dry before watering, as excess water can rot the roots. Each orchid has specific light, ventilation and humidity requirements. Try to plant them in a space where there is optimum air circulation, so that you can prevent fungal disease.

If you notice that the orchid's foliage is stained, wilted or has insects on it, it may have pests.  To control pests you can use fungicides or predatory mites. Orchid pruning should be carried out very carefully, using clean tools and pruning only the dead or damaged parts.

If you want to grow orchids at home, you should know that they adapt very well indoors, as long as they have adequate light, water and ventilation to keep them healthy and blooming. Here are some important tips for successfully growing orchids.

  • Use pots with slits so that the water has a place to drain.
  • Use specific fertilizers because they have different nutritional needs from other species you may have in your home.
  • Choose an aerated and drainable substrate, such as moss, pine bark, always avoiding substrates that can retain a lot of water. Avoid water accumulating at the bottom of the pot and, if necessary, leave the pot without the plate.
  • Always look at the orchid's foliage, because the leaves should always be green and if they are yellow, this could indicate an excess of light or problems with the roots.
  • Always clean the leaves and if you notice any pest infestations, use insecticides specifically for orchids.

By growing orchids properly and always maintaining them properly, your orchids will grow healthily and display a unique beauty.
