5G is the next generation of mobile internet networks, an evolution of the current 4G internet connection, which is beginning to take its first limited steps in some countries around the world, such as Brazil itself recently in some states. Even so, this change in internet is not enough for extremely exaggerated processes, but significant improvements in some aspects of 4G internet.

What is 5G?

It is the fifth generation of mobile networks that is expected to improve connections compared to the 4G network. It promises to bring more speed for downloading and sending files, make the internet more stable and also reduce response times between different devices. It has been under development since the 2000s, and after several years of improvements it went live in 2019 in only a few countries, and to an extremely limited extent.

What makes 5G so revolutionary?

The factors that have made 5G better than its previous version are its speed, coverage and latency, which measures the time between a command being executed on the device until it is sent over the network and executed. As well as having a major impact on games, where touching the screen performs some kind of action, it also influences tasks such as autonomous vehicles, or other diverse activities, such as robots that assist in surgery.

The 4g network has an average latency of 50 milliseconds, while the next version of mobile networks promises an average of around 5 milliseconds. In other words, 10 times better.

5G in the world

Here in Brazil we have very little of this type of network, in fact, for the time being it only exists in Brasilia and in other states in the future. But in the world it is more abundant in other countries, which were the first to operate the 5G network:

  • South Korea
  • United States
  • China
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • Spain
