Why Prejudice Still Exists in the 21st Century

If we look it up in the dictionary, prejudice is an opinion or thought about something or someone, without proper knowledge or foundation. But we know that it goes much further than that, because prejudice is a saga of intolerance, hatred, segregation and discrimination. Its cause is ignorance, because it reveals that the prejudiced person has a very high lack of knowledge and tolerance and can influence others to think and act in the same way against other people or social groups. This type of positioning is still very present throughout the world, affecting and destroying a lot of society worldwide.

But what are the most common types of prejudice?

  • Machismo: a belief that men are superior to women, that women are the weaker sex and should be submissive to them.
  • Racism: people believe that there are races that are superior to others, and it is very common for it to be practiced against black and brown people. There is still a lot of this type of prejudice, but it is often veiled, and few people admit to being prejudiced.
The fight against it is growing through social policies in various sectors of society.
  • Social status: a feeling of superiority, where those who are better off financially think they are superior to those who are not. Prejudice also exists in the opposite direction, when those who are less well-off judge those who are more well-off as snobbish.
  • Xenophobia: hatred or aversion to what is different. It discriminates against people of a different origin or culture.
  • Religious prejudice: They attack, persecute and insult people who preach and follow different religions to their own.
  • Cultural prejudice: they don't accept the beliefs and habits of a people, for example the Hindu faith, who don't eat beef because they consider the cow to be a sacred animal.
  • Prejudice against the disabled: this prejudice covers not only discrimination against the physically or mentally handicapped, but also a more humane approach on the part of those in power to support and offer suitable conditions, such as easy access for the physically handicapped in social environments, preparing schools to better accommodate students with Down's Syndrome and autism, because inclusion is the best way to reduce discrimination.
  • Appearance prejudice: where appearance is more important than competence, dignity, etc. They only look at the person's physical condition, whether they are fat or thin, tall or short, whether they have a tattoo or not, in short, any other characteristic that the prejudiced person considers to be outside their standard.
  • Homobofia: prejudice against LGBTSQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersexual, Asexual and Non-binary Identities) citizens.

We must understand that prejudice is a destructive position for the whole of humanity, it doesn't add anything to our evolution. We need to take a closer and better look at this type of disease, which is prejudice, so that it no longer exists anywhere on this planet. We are all one race, the human race, and when there is a separation of values, it only diminishes who we are. The best way to end or reduce prejudice is to get to know issues and people better and understand that we are the same.

No to prejudice!
