According to the WHO, the number of people living with depression increased by 18% between 2005 and 2015. It is estimated that more than 300 million people of all ages currently suffer from the illness worldwide, while in Brazil, around 5.8% of the population suffers from depression. Even so, depression can still be prevented and "treated", a better understanding of the illness can help reduce the damage caused by the condition, and lead more people to seek appropriate help.
The organization also warned that despite the existence of effective treatments for depression, less than half of those affected worldwide - and in some countries less than 10% of cases - receive medical help. The barriers include a lack of resources, a shortage of trained professionals and the social stigma associated with mental disorders, as well as failures in diagnosis. This increases the burden of depression and other mental health conditions around the world.
In this case, how to resolve this illness can become a common doubt: is it really possible to treat it alone? Many people think it's an excess of sadness, something that could be wrong, because sadness is an unpleasant but passing emotion, unlike depression, which involves people in despair, apathy and hopelessness. begin to pass and ignore feelings, making the help of a specialist necessary. A psychologist should therefore be sought, but healthy habits and treatments should also be used to support treatment:
