What Does It Mean to Be a Minimalist?

Minimalism was an artistic and cultural manifestation that took place at different times in the 20th century, where the minimum of elements was used to express communication and art.Today, this concept has been incorporated into various forms of expression and has become a lifestyle, where people consume what is necessary to have a happy and fulfilling life. People who consider themselves minimalists prioritize a simpler life and place great value on self-knowledge, shunning unnecessary consumption and disapproving of the capitalist system.

The slogan "less is more",  is a very faithful example of the minimalist person,  where the main objective is to focus on the essential and the versatile. Unbridled consumerism is a nightmare for people who consider themselves minimalists,  because they believe that no one needs to get so many things to be happy. The minimalist believes that sustainability will save our planet and seeks to contribute so that future generations can experience what previous generations have experienced.

Minimalist positioning has a huge impact on our environment, because when we consume less and reuse what we can, waste consumption decreases a lot and our planet breathes better. But how can we consume less in a capitalist society? I'll give you some examples below:

  • First of all, assess your real needs or perhaps desires before buying any product.
  • If you really need to buy some products, make a list before you go shopping, so you don't buy what you don't need.
  • Value quality over quantity.
  • Try to limit your shopping time so that you have an objective focus and don't spend unnecessarily.
  • If you notice that you have some products in your home that you no longer use, try to donate them to those in need, that way you won't accumulate unnecessary items and you'll also help others.
  • Don't value fashion so much, because it's fleeting.
  • Try visiting places that sell used products in good condition, maybe you'll like something and you'll help reduce waste and pay less for it.

Living with more experiences and less consumerism is essential wisdom if we are to understand that our happiness lies in our purpose in life and not in the material goods we have.
